Moringa Leaves Chutney


Moringa is known as Drumstick leaves, Shevaga (Marathi), Shajan (Hindi) and Munagakaya (Telugu). Moringa leaves are superfood because of high content of nutrients and antioxidants. They are rich source of multiple vitamins (A, B, C, D, E, folic acid), iron, minerals and fiber. It is a great source of plant-based protein.

 This is the easy, simple but nutritious green chutney recipe, packed with many nutrients.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups moringa leaves
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • ½ cup tomato pieces
  • 2-3 dried red chilies
  • Salt

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1’ inch tamarind
  • ¼ cup roasted chana (alternative can be raw chana daal)
  • Chopped cilantro
  • 7-8 garlic cloves

Method:

  • Wash moringa leaves thoroughly in water and set aside
  • Hear oil in a pan, add cumin and coriander seeds
  • Once cumin seeds start crackling, add roasted chana (or raw chana daal)
  • Sauté for 1-2 minutes
  • Add onion and cook for 2 minutes

  • Then add garlic cloves and continue stirring
  • Add tamarind and dried red chilies
  • Once onion starts turning pinkish, add tomato pieces
  • After 1 minute, add moringa leaves and salt, mix well and continue cooking until the mixture gets cooked well
  • Lastly, turn off the stove, add cilantro, mix well
  • Let the mixture cook down
  • Then grind it to coarse paste

  • Optional: You can add tempering (tadka) on it
  • Enjoy the chutney either with hot rice and ghee or with roti.
