Metkut (Maharashtrian Spice Powder)


Metkut is an authentic Maharashtrian recipe. It is called Menthe hattu in Kannada and menthi pindi in Telugu. It is a spiced powder made from dry roasted wheat and lentils along with spices. It is very easy to digest and can be consumed daily. It is eaten with hot cooked rice along with ghee.   

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg roasted chana dal (futane)
  • ½ cup wheat
  • ¼ cup coriander seeds
  • 2 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 3 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 2 dried turmeric roots
  • ½ cup red chili powder
  • ¼ cup salt
  • 1 tsp hing (asafoetida powder)

Method:

  • Dry roast wheat, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds separately on low heat
  • Take two dried turmeric roots, dry roast them by adding few drops of oil
  • Once all the roasted ingredients cool down, grind them along with roasted chana dal, asafoetida, salt, chili powder into a fine powder
  • Run through the sieve to get rid of any coarse bits
  • Store it in an air tight container
  • Once prepared, metkut powder can be stored for a long time.
  • Serve this powder with hot rice and ghee.
