This is a very simple but delicious curry.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups chana dal
- ½ cup chopped onions
- 3-4 dried red chili
- 2 tbsp tamarind paste
- Jaggery as per your taste
- Salt
- Oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1.5 tsp garam masala
- 2 tsp coriander powder (optional)
Method:
- Wash chana dal thoroughly and soak it for 2 hours
- Add oil to a pan and heat it
- Add mustard and cumin seeds and let them crackle
- Add red chili pieces and saute them
- Then add chopped onions and saute until they turn golden
- Add turmeric powder, chili powder, garam masala and salt
- Mix and cook for one minute
- Add soaked chana dal only (no water)
- Let the mixture blend properly
- Cook for 2 minutes
- Add 3-4 cups of water
- Cook on medium flame with lid on
- Stir in between and add more water if needed
- Chana dal takes more time to cook compared to other dals
- When chana dal is 70% cooked, add tamarind paste and jaggery
- Adjust the salt
- Continue cooking until chana dal cooks 90%
- Turn off the stove and serve hot with rice or roti.
