Chana Dal Curry


This is a very simple but delicious curry.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chana dal
  • ½ cup chopped onions
  • 3-4 dried red chili
  • 2 tbsp tamarind paste
  • Jaggery as per your taste
  • Salt
  • Oil

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1.5 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp coriander powder (optional)

Method:

  • Wash chana dal thoroughly and soak it for 2 hours
  • Add oil to a pan and heat it
  • Add mustard and cumin seeds and let them crackle
  • Add red chili pieces and saute them
  • Then add chopped onions and saute until they turn golden
  • Add turmeric powder, chili powder, garam masala and salt
  • Mix and cook for one minute
  • Add soaked chana dal only (no water)
  • Let the mixture blend properly

  • Cook for 2 minutes
  • Add 3-4 cups of water
  • Cook on medium flame with lid on
  • Stir in between and add more water if needed
  • Chana dal takes more time to cook compared to other dals
  • When chana dal is 70% cooked, add tamarind paste and jaggery
  • Adjust the salt
  • Continue cooking until chana dal cooks 90%
  • Turn off the stove and serve hot with rice or roti.
