Health is a human condition with physical, social, and psychological dimensions, each characterized on a continuum with positive and negative poles. Positive health is associated with a capacity to enjoy life and to withstand challenges; it is not merely the absence of disease. Negative health is associated with illness, and in the extreme, with premature death.

To achieve a good life, we have to adopt a healthy lifestyle which includes a balanced diet, physical exercise, good hydration, enough sleep, limiting screen use, mental well-being, social life and positive attitude towards life.

This is not an article as such. It is the compilation of my previous articles related to above mentioned aspects of healthy lifestyle to make it easy for the readers.

Dare To Be Fit!-Physical Activity Guidelines: Physical activity is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. Being physically active is one of the most important actions that people of all ages can take to improve their health. It begins in infancy and extends throughout adulthood. It keeps you healthy, happy, stress free, disease free and prolongs your life. It is not too late. Some physical activity is better than none. Children have different recommendations based on their age. Adults should be physically active at least 150 minutes per week. Follow the age appropriate recommendations and choose the activities which suit your need and lifestyle.

A Mindful Diet-General Guideline for a Healthy Diet: Food is our basic need. People usually get confused about what a proper diet is. What diet actually means is all the food and liquids we consume. Food pyramid is replaced with MyPlate”, which shows the five food groups (fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, and dairy). It is designed to be easy to understand when you think about what types of food to include in each meal that you eat. Limit sugar intake. Remember, there is no bad fruit, vegetable, nut, seed, legume, or whole grain. They are all good!

Brain Power Matters! Happiness is a state of mind. We all want to be happy. Your happiness lies in your own hands, and no one else controls it. A healthy mind lives in a healthy body and vice versa. Mental health means our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It is essential at every stage of life, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. Higher psychological well-being is associated with longer and healthier lives. Brain exercises, yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, positive attitude along with addressing other aspects of health can bring you better qualify of mental well-being.

SHHH…MY Brain Is Sleeping!  Everyone needs sleep! Sleep is an important part of our life. It is very important for our physical as well as mental health. Adequate sleep duration for age on a regular basis leads to improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep each night is associated with an increase in injuries, hypertension, obesity and depression, especially for teens who may experience increased risk of self-harm, anxiety disorders or suicidal thoughts. It can also lead to mood swings, behavioral problems such as ADHD and cognitive problems that impact on their ability to learn in school.

Are You Drinking Enough Water? Water is life! It is essential for good health. Each cell of our body needs water to function properly. Water requirement can vary based on age, gender, activity level and weather. Not drinking enough water can cause dehydration. Dehydration can lead to headaches, tiredness, muscle cramps, low blood pressure and racing of the heart. Plain water is the best choice because it is free of sugars, sweeteners or other additives. The best way of staying hydrated is drinking decent amount of water plus eating hydrating foods to get vitamins, minerals and fibers additionally. Water is not the source of life, it is life!

Screen Time: How Much Is Too Much? In this technological era, many are facing the big problem of “SCREEN TIME”, especially with kids. Screen time means how much time you spend on electronic devices like T.V., smartphones, video games, computer, tablets, iPads etc. For the healthy mental and physical growth of a child, there should be adequate physical activity, healthy nutrition, good sleep hygiene, and a nurturing social environment. It is very important to balance between screen time/online time and other activities. Proper use of screen can be beneficial, but too much screen time has many negative effects on children. AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) has some recommendations for various ages. Screen has become a part of our life. So, we can not avoid it, but we should use it wisely to get more benefits and less negative effects of it!

Vitamins and Minerals:  Vitamins and minerals are two of the main types of nutrients that our body needs to survive and stay healthy. Vitamins A, D, E, K are fat soluble and vitamins B and C are water soluble. Vitamins help in resisting infections, keep the nerves healthy, help our body to get energy from food and help blood to clot properly. Deficiency as well as overdose of any vitamin is not good. Along with vitamins, we need minerals too. Some minerals, like iodine and fluoride, are only needed in very small quantities. Others, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are needed in larger amounts. As with vitamins, if you eat a varied diet, you will probably get enough of most minerals.
