Dink (Gum) Laddoo


Dink or edible gum is a natural resin from the tree bark. It has wonderful medicinal uses and health benefits. Dink along with dry fruits (any combination of dry fruits), makhana, ghee (clarified butter,) and sugar is used to make these laddoo. These laddoo are usually consumed during the winter and are commonly recommended for new mothers and sick people. Dink helps to develop strong bones and improves immunity. It is a good energy food for kids. It helps with lactation for lactating mothers.

The interesting thing about this recipe is you can change the ingredients as well as their portions according to your taste. Some people roast all the ingredients in ghee one by one and then make the powder.

Ingredients:

  • ½ kg Dried dates (Kharik)
  • ½ Kg Dried coconut
  • 250 gm Dink (Gum)
  • ¼-½ kg Ghee
  • 150 gm Sugar-or as per taste
  • 4 tsp Poppy seeds (Khaskhas)
  • 1 tsp Cardamom powder
  • 250 gm Cashew nuts
  • 250 gm Almonds or Almond flour
  • Makhana
  • Pistachios
  • Walnut
  • 1 tsp Dried ginger + black pepper powder
  • Optional:
    • 100 gm Godambi (Marking nut)
    • 100 gms Charoli (Chironji seeds)-optional
    • 100 gms Raisins (kismis)-optional
    • ½ tsp Nutmeg (Jaiphal) powder (optional)

Method:

  • Dink/gum powder can be made in two different ways:
    1. Sundry the dink for two days and grind it to a fine powder. This is the healthier option.
    2. Take some ghee in a pan and heat it. Add dink and roast them on low flame until it puffs up and turns golden brown. Once it cools down, you can make a fine powder.

  • Break kharik into small pieces, remove the seeds and grind it to a fine to coarse (as per your taste) powder.
  • Make small pieces of dried coconut (you can grate them instead) and grind them to a fine powder.
  • Similarly, grind cashews, walnut and almonds to a fine or coarse powder.  
  • Roast makhana and grind to the powder.
  • Take a mixing bowl. Add powdered sugar (some people use jaggery), dried ginger + pepper powder, Charoli, pieces of godambi, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, and mix well.

 

  • Take the melted clarified butter and add slowly to the mixture and mix well.
  • Start making balls with both hands.
  • Store them in an airtight container.
  • Dink laddoo are ready.
  • Use the laddoo in moderation as each laddoo has many calories.
