Moth Bean (Matki) Curry


Moth Beans are called Matki in Marathi and Bobbarlu in Telugu. Moth bean curry or matki chi rassa bhaji is the Maharashtrian style curry made by using sprouted moth beans.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Moth beans
  • Fistful of chickpeas
  • 1 cup onion pieces
  • 2 medium sized tomatoes
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • ¼ cup dried coconut slices
  • ¼ cup cilantro
  • 1-inch ginger
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1.5 tsp red chili powder
  • 2 tbsp garam masala
  •  Salt
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp sugar (optional)

Method:

  • Wash and soak the moth beans and chickpeas overnight
  • Next morning, drain the water
  •  Take a muslin cloth and add soaked beans to it
  • Bring together all edges of a cloth
  • Place it in a colander and cover with a plate

  • After 24 hours, wash and drain the beans
  • If you want longer sprouts, you can continue it for another day or two
  • Once the sprouts are ready, rinse it in cool water and keep aside
  • Dry roast coconut slices and keep them aside
  • Fry onion pieces in small amount of oil until golden
  • Now, make a fine paste of fried onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, cilantro, and coconut
  • Heat oil in a pan and add the paste to it
  • Mix and cook on low flame until raw smell goes away and oil starts separating
  • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, coriander powder and garam masala (here I used readymade curry masala) and saute
  • Add bean and 2 cups of water
  • Let it simmer with the lid till moth beans are cooked well
  • If needed, add more water
  • The consistency of the curry should be little thin
  • Add sugar if interested
  • Adjust the salt and serve hot with rice or roti!
