Urad Dal-Onion Curry


If you ran out of curry options, you can try this simple yet healthy recipe, which can be made with a few ingredients that are always available in every Indian household.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium-sized onions (Shallots can be used in place of onions)
  • 1.5 cup urad dal
  • 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • Tennis ball-sized jaggery
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp Hing (optional)

Method:

  • Peel and cut onions into big cubes
  • Take a pan, add oil, and heat it
  • Once the oil is hot, add mustard and cumin seeds and let them crackle
  • Add hing and then fenugreek seeds
  • Let fenugreek seeds turn golden and then add onions
  • Saute onions for 2 minutes

  • Add washed and drained urad dal to it and mix well
  • Then add turmeric powder, mix well and add 3-4 cups of water
  • Cover with the lid and cook it on medium flame
  • Once urad dal starts a little softened, add jaggery, salt, and red chili powder
  • Mix well
  • Add water to cook it to desired consistency
  • Let it cook until urad dal cooks 90%
  • Turn the stove off
  • This curry goes well with rice or roti.
