Tres Leches Cake is a very soft and moist cake. It is soaked with a 3-milk mixture. In Spanish, tres=3 and leches=milk. And it is topped with a lightly sweetened whipped cream.
There are 3 main steps:
- Bake a cake (either by method A or method B)
- Make holes with a fork on cake, pore the mixture of three milks over it and keep it refrigerated overnight.
- Next day, decorate it with whipped cream
To make a cake, you can use a ready-made cake mix (method A) or make it from the scratch (method B).
Ingredients:
Method A: Using a ready-made cake mix.
- Vanilla/yellow cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup oil
- 1 cup water
- Take a mixing bowl. Break the eggs into it and beat them with an electric mixer at high speed. Add oil and then cake mix to it. Lastly, add water. The batter is ready.
Method B:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 3 eggs
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- Take a mixing bowl. Add all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix it. In another bowl, break the eggs into it and beat them with an electric mixer at high speed. Add sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract and mix well. Lastly, add the mixture of all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder and mix with a spatula. The batter is ready.
Syrup:
- 12 oz evaporated milk
- 9 oz sweetened condensed milk
- 1/3 cup milk
Frosting:
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
Method:
- Preheat the oven to 350 °F and butter a 9×13 casserole pan
- Pour the batter you made into the casserole dish and bake for 20-28 minutes or until golden brown. To check if the cake is finished, poke the center of the cake with it and if it comes out clean, the cake is finished baking
- After baking, let it cool for 10 minutes.
- In another large bowl, mix together condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy whipping cream.
- With a fork, poke holes through the top of the cake
- Pour the syrup (mixture of three milks) over the cake, cover, and, refrigerate overnight
- To make the frosting, whip the heavy whipping cream until it becomes fluffy and add sugar to taste
- Spread frosting over cake and decorate
