Jowar (Sorghum) Flour Upma


It is a spiced jowar flour recipe, usually served for breakfast. Jowar flour is gluten free. It is good for people with diabetes as it has low glycemic index.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Cups Jowar Flour
  • 2 cups chopped Onions
  • 2-3 dried red Chilies
  •  2 tbs Chana dal
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 5 teaspoons Oil
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice

Method:

  • Heat oil in a pan and add jowar flour (it needs more oil as flour is dry compared to other flours)
  • Mix well and roast it until it changes color
  • Transfer it to a bowl and keep aside
  • In the same pan, add 1 tsp oil and heat it
  • Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
  • Add chana dal and dried red chilies and roast them for 1 minute.
  • Add chopped onions and cook until they become translucent.
  • Boil 3 cups of and add it to the pan
  • Now add salt, flour to it and mix well with the ingredients.

  • Keep stirring to avoid the lump formation.
  • Lastly, add lemon juice to the mix.
  • Cover it with the lid to cook on steam.
  • Mix it intermittently until it is done.
  • Once done turn off the heat and transfer upma to the serving bowl.
