Cracked-wheat Khichdi


Cracked wheat is also known as dalia. Dalia khichdi is a very nutritious dish made with cracked wheat, moong dal and lots of vegetables. You can cook it in instant pot or on the stove. I used instant pot.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups cracked wheat
  • ½ cup moong dal
  • 1 tsp ghee or clarified butter
  • ½ cup chopped onions
  • 2-3 garlic cloves
  • 3-4 dried red chilies
  • ½ cup chopped cilantro
  • ¼ cup tomato pieces
  • 2 bay leaves (optional)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt
  • Veggies of your choice: green pepper, red/yellow/orange capsicums, beans, carrot, green peas, sweet corn etc

Method:

  • Wash and drain moong dal
  • Start saute mode of instant pot
  • Add ghee and let it melt
  • Add cumin seeds and then bay leaves
  • Next, add dried red chilies, garlic and onion
  • Once onion becomes translucent, add all the veggies
  • Turn off saute mode
  • Add turmeric powder, salt and mix well
  • After 2 minutes, add cracked wheat and moong dal
  • Add cilantro and 6 cups water
  • Turn on pressure cook mode and cook it for 15 minutes
  • Serve hot once it is done
